Royal jelly is a milky secretion produced by worker honey bees. It’s a honey bee secretion that’s used in the nutrition of larvae and adult queens. It typically contains about 60% to 70% water, 12% to 15% proteins, 10% to 16% sugar, 3% to 6% fats, and 2% to 3% vitamins, salts, and amino acids. Its composition varies depending on geography and climate. This product gets its name from the fact that bees use it for the development and nurturing of queen bees. Some people use royal jelly as medicine.

Yes, Royal Jelly is produced by bees. When the young worker bees go out to look for nectar (the substance from which honey is made) they also collect pollens from flowers. Pollen forms the food source for ordinary worker bees from 4 days onwards. By a natural process of digesting pollen by allowing it to mix with the secretions from the worker bees’ salivary glands a milky substance is secreted. This substance is Royal Jelly, which is fed only to the queen bee to sustain her high energy and nutrient requirements.
(4) Under what conditions do bees feed on Royal Jelly?
In the insect world, only bees can produce their own nutritional food. But Royal Jelly, as its name suggests, is only for the queen bee. About the only time in their lives when worker bees and drones (male bees) can have access to this super-rich food is during the first 3 days after being hatched. From the 4th day onwards, their diet is switched to one of honey and pollen. Only the queen bee continues to be fed Royal Jelly. As a result of this super-rich diet, the queen bee grows to double the size of ordinary worker bees. She can lay eggs (2,000 – 2,500 a day) which measure up to more than twice her body weights. On top of that, the life span of a queen bee is exceptionally long, being 20-30 times that of worker bees.

Yes, there is a significant difference between honey and Royal Jelly in terms of composition. Royal Jelly is derived from pollens (the potent male part of the flower) which are naturally reacted with the excretions from the worker bees’ salivary glands. As a food source, Royal Jelly is very rich in proteins, vitamins, enzymes, minerals and amino acids.
Honey is derived from nectar, a fluid secreted by plants. Together with the pollens collected, they are stored in the hive to provide food for worker bees and drones. Honey is slightly brownish and has a pleasant, sweet taste. Royal Jelly is milky white and tastes sour and is slightly astringent.

Royal Jelly is rich in natural enzymes, vitamins A, B complex, C, D, E, amino acids, minerals and hormones.
